Back on the afternoon of December 23rd, a van carrying 10 tourists from South Korea got stuck in the snow during a blizzard on their way from Washington, D.C. to Niagara Falls. Not knowing what to do next, the tourists knocked on the door of a home that was close by to see if they could borrow some shovels to dig the van out, but the offer they got was even better.
The homeowners are Buffalo residents Alex and Andrea Campagna. Being from Buffalo their entire lives, they knew the tourists would not be able to shovel out snow from a blizzard, especially in frigid conditions. So on the eve of Christmas Eve, they opened up their home and hosted the foreign guests. For two nights, the seven women and three men slept on couches, in sleeping bags, on an air mattress, and in the home’s guest room.
The hosts and their guests spent the weekend swapping stories, watching football, and dining together. Yoseb Choi, who was on his honeymoon with his new wife, said happening upon the Campagna’s home was “fate,” and said their hosts were “the kindest people” he’d ever met. And Alex called the unexpected guests a “unique blessing” and the experience has inspired the couple to plan a future visit to South Korea.
