An Uber driver from New York is being called a hero after going into a burning building to help residents escape. Uber driver Fritz Sam was driving passenger Jemma Wei through Brooklyn on the way to LaGuardia Airport when they passed by a three-story apartment building with flames pouring out of one of the second-story windows.
The husband and father of two stopped his car and ran inside the home to make sure everyone got out safely. Frtiz said: "When I thought that there might be someone inside that building, there was something in me that couldn't hold back. I just had to go inside." According to his passenger, Sam managed to help two residents escape. As he was helping them outside, firefighters arrived and within a half an hour they had the blaze under control.
Fortunately, no one was injured in the fire, but Wei believes that if Sam hadn’t stopped to help, things might have turned out very differently. Uber later released a statement praising Sam, "We're incredibly grateful to have such a heroic and thoughtful member of our community in Fritz. Today, he went above and beyond to keep his neighbors in New York safe -- and still managed to get his rider to the airport on time."
