It really sounds totally impossible, but last weekend a 54-year-old Croatian man broke his own world record for holding your breath underwater. This guy did it for an incredible 24 minutes and 33 seconds. That's like the entire length of a sitcom!
To pull off this amazing record, he hyperventilated on pure oxygen for a few minutes before he began his attempt. Who does this?
His record didn’t just happen on a whim. Budimir Buda Šobat trained for years to do it and has actually become one of the top divers in the world. He says that part of his training is to deal with the involuntary muscle spasms that happen after holding your breath for about 18 minutes. Hahaha. That happens to me after 18 seconds. Šobat says he uses those spasms to help him stay awake.
He did this again because he was inspired by his 20-year-old daughter Saša who has cerebral palsy, autism and epilepsy, and to help raise money to rebuild the region, which was devastated by an earthquake in December. Way to go man!!
