Florida Teacher Raises Money To Have Classroom Hand Washing Sink

Washing hands

Annette Fernandez is a third grade teacher at Turie T. Small Elementary in Daytona Beach. When she got back to her portable classroom to prep for the upcoming school year, she realized there was a problem. The portable wasn’t close to a bathroom . In this time of the pandemic, kids are being asked to constantly wash their hands (because they're always touching their face!). But with the bathroom too far for a convenient hand washing, she decided to do something about it.

When Fernandez found out from the principal that there wasn't any money for a hand-washing station, she began a GoFundMe account to raise some. Within two hours, she had more than the $1,500 she needed to put a sink in her classroom. The money will also supply soap, paper towels, hand sanitizer and cleaning wipes. Her principal gave her the go-ahead to do the GoFundMe and she raised so much, she is able buy another station for another classroom.

“Hand washing is such a basic necessity ... and it’s the number one thing to prevent the spread of COVID,” Fernandez explains. “The most important thing is that these kids get what they need.”
