Hernando County, FL - Hernando County commissioners have voted to keep the West Hernando Branch Library open, reversing a proposal that would have permanently closed the facility as county officials continue working through budget challenges.
The decision came after residents filled a county commission meeting to voice opposition to the proposed closure, arguing the library provides important educational resources, internet access, public programs and meeting space for the surrounding community.
Commissioners ultimately voted to preserve the branch, which has been temporarily closed while repairs are made to its air conditioning system.
The West Hernando Branch Library, officially known as the Staffordene T. Foggia Memorial Library, has been closed since May because of HVAC issues.
County officials said the building is expected to reopen once repairs are completed, allowing library services to resume at the location.
The proposed closure was introduced as part of broader discussions about reducing county spending during the budget process.
Officials estimated that permanently closing the library would have lowered annual operating costs and eliminated several county positions.
The proposal was considered as Hernando County prepares for the possibility of reduced property tax revenue tied to a referendum expected to appear before voters later this year.
Although commissioners rejected the recommendation to close the library, county leaders acknowledged they must continue identifying other ways to balance the budget.
Additional discussions on potential spending reductions are expected as officials work toward finalizing the county's financial plan.
The vote ensures the West Hernando Branch Library will remain part of the county's library system once repairs are finished, preserving access to library services for residents who rely on the facility for books, technology, educational programming and community activities.
