Miami, FL - Jim Larrañaga, the University of Miami's all-time winningest men's basketball coach, has announced his immediate retirement after a 14-season tenure.

Larrañaga, 75, cited a diminishing passion for the game and a desire to spend more time with family as reasons for his departure.

He also reportedly expressed frustration with the evolving landscape of college athletics, particularly the challenges posed by Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) deals and player transfers.

Assistant coach Bill Courtney has been appointed interim head coach for the remainder of the season.

Larrañaga's distinguished career includes a 716-483 overall record, with significant successes at George Mason University and Bowling Green State University before his tenure at Miami.

His career as a coach at the University of Miami is marked by historic achievements, including the Hurricanes' first Final Four appearance in 2023.

Larrañaga's departure follows a challenging start to the current season, with the Hurricanes holding a 4-8 record.

NBC Miami reports University President Joe Echevarria praised Larrañaga's contributions, stating, "He has elevated our athletics program and increased the visibility of our institution by championing our educational mission."
