WNBA suspends Alyssa Thomas for Caitlin Clark Throat Hit

WNBA suspending Phoenix Mercury's player Alyssa Thomas for one game for thrusting her fist into the throat of Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark during a game Wednesday night, the WNBA said Thursday.

No foul was called on the "hit" when it happened with 6 minutes and 52 seconds left in the second quarter, but she has since received a flagrant foul penalty.

Thomas' fist made sustained contact with Clark's throat as she was pinned to the floor and Fever coach Stephanie White called the no-call "egregious" in comments after the game.

"The fact that it was a no-call … You got to call it," White said, adding that the lack of a foul in the moment was "absolutely unacceptable."

The WNBA review after the game "deemed (Thomas) to have committed a non-basketball act" by recklessly making contact with Clark's throat.

Thomas will serve her suspension Saturday, June 27, when the Mercury play the Toronto Tempos at home.
