South Florida Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman-Schultz has continued political ambitions, today announcing her candidacy for Florida's District 20. The Broward district has been represented by black men and women since it was created in 1992, and the Florida Legislative Black Caucus is not on board with Wasserman-Schultz serving there.
• Alcee Hastings: Served from January 1993 until his death in April 2021.
• Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick: Elected in a January 2022 special election and served until her resignation in April 2026
Cherfilus-McCormick is running to reclaim the seat along with former Broward commissioner and Mayor Dale Holness and South Florida rapper turned politician Luther Campbell.
The Florida Legislative Black Caucus says, "for generations, Black Floridians have fought tirelessly for the right to vote and for that vote to result in meaningful representation. This fight has not been easy, marked by sacrifice, organizing, and the courage to overcome various forms of racial discrimination and exclusion. Today, as we face a crucial juncture in our history, we must reaffirm our commitment to protecting the political power of Black communities."
