UFO On Palm Beach Is Actually Old Fishing Device

The fine folks in Palm Beach thought they might have found a UFO floating on their shoreline. A plastic disc as tall as a man and strung with knotty ropes like jellyfish tentacles was found marooned on the Atlantic shore.

But it wasn't a UFO. Actually, it was a sophisticated version of a fish aggregating device, something that is used in the waters off West Africa to attract tuna. The devices, which can be as simple as bamboo or oil jugs tied together with netting hung beneath them, have been increasingly spotted here on Florida beaches although scientists are unsure if it’s because there are more of them, or if people are just reporting them more.

Either way, these things have made it a long way across the ocean from Africa to our coast.
