FAU Working With Local Bars To Provide Help If A Date Goes Wrong

College students who feel unsafe on a date at bars in southeast Florida may be able to get help from the bartender. More than 10 bars and restaurants in Boca Raton, Jupiter, and Fort Lauderdale now have posters hanging in their restrooms instructing women to notify bartenders if they feel uncomfortable or are in danger and they do it by ordering a special drink.

The woman orders something called the “Owl Shot” and depending on what’s happening, she’ll ask for the drink one of three ways. Each of them is a coded phrase and based on the order, this is how bartenders will respond:

  • Neat” - Bar staff will escort you to your car
  • On the rocks” - Bar staff will call a ride for you
  • With lime” - Bar staff will call the police

The idea came from Florida Atlantic University’s student government after its members were trying to come up with ways to protect students. “Everyone’s on board,” explains Alejandra Rodriguez, Governmental Relations Director at FAU. “Bar owners love it, the administration thinks it’s a great idea. There’s really been no negative response to it at all.”
