Why Indy 500 Winners Get Milk In Victory Lane

Marcus Ericcson was in victory lane this year at the Indianapolis 500. As is the norm, he celebrated with a delicious glass of milk. If you've ever seen the winner take a swig and then pour that milk all over them while standing in their car's cockpit, with the flower ring hanging on their shoulders, you might have wondered to yourself what the deal is with the milk every year.

The tradition started way back in 1933 with winner Louis Meyer, who drank it after his second victory. He told folks that he did it because his mom told him that “buttermilk was the best thing to drink on a hot day.” Yuck!

Then in 1946, the milk thing took a break. However, ten years later, it took hold and became a “tradition” beginning in 1956, thanks to local dairy farmers. Drivers have axed the buttermilk, and opted more for whole milk, 2%, and chocolate milk.
