High School Senior Gets $1.3 Million In Scholarship Offers

Mya Grimes is a senior at Metro High School in St. Louis who’s on the honor roll and is the captain of her school’s track and volleyball teams. Last November, she started applying for college admission and set a goal for herself to get $1-million in scholarship offers. More than 30 applications and just over five months later, she’s surpassed her goal and has received more than $1.3-million in offers.

"It just feels really good to have achieved this,” says the 17-year-old. “I'm glad to be a part of some positive news that I can share with the world." The word is out now, but Mya kept her achievement a secret from her parents, saying, "I just wanted to surprise my mom and dad." When her mom, Tina Grimes, found out about the scholarships, she expressed who proud she is of her daughter. “Mya has proven that she does not fit in a box and whatever she determines as excellence, that is what she's going to go for," Tina says.

Mya has decided she’s going to attend Jackson State University in Mississippi in the fall. “I plan to study business administration,” she says. “JSU is my mom's alma mater and I'm really excited to go there.” When asked if she has any advice for other seniors trying to get college scholarships, she says. “believe in yourself, follow your passions and just go for it."
