In November of 2020, 14-year-old Ely Dehart was killed when the truck he was driving overturned on a gravel road in rural Nebraska. Ely had attended the Sumner-Eddyville-Miller School since the third grade where he was a member of the basketball team and close friends with his teammates. So when Ely’s mom, Jennifer Dehart returned to the school to cheer on her son’s team, the team started a new tradition where each team member comes and gives her a hug.
Dehart posted a video to her TikTok of a touching moment when the team members ran across the court one at a time to hug her. The post received over a million likes and over 4-million views.
