On the very first day of her retirement, a Kentucky nurse hit it big with a $200-thousand win on a scratch-off lottery ticket. The anonymous woman from Dana, who worked on the COVID-19 frontlines for the last two years, decided to retire after 36 years on the job.

The next morning, the former nurse stopped at a convenience store in Prestonsburg and purchased a $10 scratch-off ticket. She scratched the card while standing in the store and realized she’d won the game’s top prize of $200-thousand. Last week, she drove to Kentucky lottery headquarters in Louisville and cashed in her ticket, taking home $142-thousand after taxes.

The Floyd County woman told lottery officials that the last couple of years have been tough and she reassured herself that she’d made the right decision in retiring now. The win has convinced her that she did make the right choice. "It was unbelievable," said the nurse. "I saw this as a sign it was meant to be for me to quit working."
