Palm Beach Gardens (CBS12) —The Honda Classic will bring the biggest golfers to Palm Beach Gardens in two weeks, but the defending champion was a virtual unknown when he won his first ever PGA Tour event in dramatic fashion last year with a birdie on 18. Keith Mitchell played his first practice holes at PGA National on Tuesday since that monumental win.

"It's just a special place out here," says Mitchell. "And being back here is really neat, because this is where it wall started for me in my PGA Tour career."

And what first win it was at the 2019 Honda Classic. Mitchell nailed an ultra dramatic 15 foot birdie for the win on 18, surrounded by Palm Beach County golf fans, avoiding a playoff with fan favorite Rickie Fowler and the current # 1 golfer in the world, Wellington native Brooks Koepka.

"(It was extra special) just because those guys have done it so many times prior," says Mitchell when asked if beating Koepka and Fowler down the stretch was extra special. "That means they're going to do that again and again and again. So for my first time to do that, that was pretty neat."

And so was doing it in front of his mother, who had a gut feeling she needed to be there. She traveled from Tennessee at the last minute for what was a life changing final round.

"She surprised me here," recalls Mitchell. "I was on the first tee and looked over and was like, wow, my Mom is here. If she thinks I can do it, I sure think I can do it. But that was pretty fun."

"But to repeat as the Honda Classic champion would be even more fun.

"I mean it would mean everything really. I mean, two in a row, that would be incredible. Palm Beach is always a special place, and to get your first win here at this amazing course and part of the world, it will always hold a special place in my heart."
