FAU Professor Felt Earthquake in Boca Raton

FAU Earthquake

Yesterday's earthquake in the Caribbean was so massive that one FAU professor felt the effects in Boca Raton! Dr. Barry Rosson, a civil engineer professor, said that the letters were shaking in his classroom for about 30-seconds.

“With our suspended projector hanging, I thought that maybe someone was up on the second floor causing a ruckus,” he joked. “My students were even looking at the screen, kind of feeling sick.”

The 7.7 earthquake struck 80 miles from Jamaica, but South Florida definitely felt it too. Buildings in Downtown Miami were evacuated and many people including Dr. Rosson felt it in Palm Beach County. 2 reports have also come in from as far north as the Treasure Coast.

Dr. Rossen pointed out that our hurricane resistant buildings are made to handle low-intensity shaking such as what was experienced yesterday. Additionally, FDOT stated that none of their infrastructure was damaged during the earthquake.
