Teacher Who Disarmed Then Hugged Student Getting Medal Of Honor

Last year we all saw the actions of Keanon Lowe, the teacher who saved a life by taking a gun away from a student and then hugging him in the halls of an Oregon high school. The student showed up to Parkrose High School in Portland with the shotgun and later said he planned to take his own life before Lowe stopped him. Now the football coach is being recognized for his bravery and compassion and will receive the country’s highest civilian honor from the Congressional Medal of Honor Foundation.

Lowe is one of six recipients of the Citizen Honor Award for 2020, which is given to those who “exemplify the values embodied in the Medal of Honor” courage, sacrifice, commitment, integrity, citizenship, and patriotism.” He will be honored with the Single Act of Heroism Award in a future ceremony.
