Passing Hero Saves Dog Who Fell From Ninth Floor

A Shih Tzu named Mel was playing on her ninth floor balcony in Brazil when she climbed the railing and could’t get down. She was stuck and was barking, which got the attention of a man walking by, Joao Augusto. He looked up and knew he had to do something to help this pet or she would fall to her death.

Augusto called out to the building’s caretaker to let him in the gate and once inside, he asked for a sheet or towel to try to help catch Mel, but everything happened so quickly, there just wasn’t time. Mel slipped and fell from the 100-foot balcony, but Augusto caught her and broke her fall, saving the dog from certain death.

“I was aware that I could cushion the fall,” the hero explains. “I think I was in the right place at the right time. It was a happy ending.”

After the incident Mel’s owners have put up a safety net in their balcony so their pet will be safe in the future.
