Man Gives Homeless Guy Boots Off His Feet

Jessica Bell was riding the subway home in Chicago when she witnessed an act of kindness that touched her so much, it brought tears to her eyes. She shared the story on Facebook and it started with a homeless man she noticed sitting across from her.

Bell says the homeless fella was “older, weathered, and minding his own business,” but that his feet were so swollen, he was wearing his sneakers with the backs folded down, like slip-ons. The man also had on lots of pairs of socks, to try to keep his feet warm in the frigid Windy City winter, but blood was still seeping through all the socks.

A younger guy sitting nearby was wearing big black snow boots and Bell says in the blink of an eye, he took them off and passed them to the old man. He also took a pair of socks out of the bag he was carrying and gave them to the homeless man and tells him to clean his feet and change into the new socks as soon as he can. So he literally gave this stranger in need the shoes off his feet.

“Those of us who are close enough to see and hear the exchange are floored,” Bell writes. “I love that in a time and place where hate and apathy are rampant, quiet compassion appears without warning.”
